Wiking® Super B basalt fibre products are made from volcanic rock called basalt. The rock is crushed, melted and then extruded and spun into fibre.

Basalt Fibre: Modern Solution for Today's Challenges

Wiking® Super B Fibres are  designed to solve the challenges of modern concrete construction projects and improve the quality and durability of the end result. Given the extremes in weather conditions in our Canadian climate and the resulting impact on concrete structures, basalt fibres, geogrid and rebar are perfectly suited to both deliver a quality product and extend it's life. 

Stronger than steel – light as a feather

Basalt is four times stronger than steel and 75% lighter. Not only is it easier to stock, transport and handle, much less basalt fibre is needed to achieve the same strength of concrete than steel fibres. Using basalt fibres, mesh and rebar will 

Due to the exceptional strength of basalt, the fibres may allow for thinner and lighter concrete decks and panels. Depending on the construction, basalt fibres may replace the need for steel mesh and steel bars. Using Wiking® Super B has the potential to generate siginficant cost savings - both at the time of construction and based on the extended lifetime of the concrete.

Improved concrete surface quality with basalt fibres
In contrast to steel fibres, basalt fibres do not appear at the surface of concrete, but will stay within the concrete mix. This leads to a more durable and aesthetically pleasing concrete surface.

Extending the duration of concrete and asphalt with basalt fibres
Basalt fibres can prevent the formation of plastic shrinkage cracks as the fibres will cause the tensile strength to develop early in the drying/hardening phase. Basalt fibres also increase the elasticity, making concrete and asphalt more resistant to impacts and bumps and traffic. It's resistance to moisture also minimizes the potential for cracking and spalling that is associated with steel rebar deterioration. 

Environmentally friendly and easy to dispose of
Basalt fibres are completely natural since they are made of crushed magmatic rock that is found throughout the world. During the demolition of a concrete structure, steel fibres, rebar anb mesh need to be separated from the concrete for disposal. This is not the case with basalt. Basalt can be disposed of with the concrete, resulting in significant cost savings.
